Camouflage

In the military activities the camouflage fatigues have the aim to uniform men with the surrounding environment, hiding them. And as every uniform, to pull down the differences and barriers between soldiers in the respect of all companions in arms, joined in a homogeneous group with the same goal. But what if there were no ideology to fight for?
Nowadays humans unconsciously struggle for the only creed in which they really believe: self-worship and adoration of their image. Every behaviour is a declination of aesthetic egotism, truly shared and collective. The mud and grass pattern, elegantly defined camo, is able to adjust like a chameleon to reality and it inverts its original function and acquires a new meaning, becoming a trumpet call to catch the attention in the urban greyness. But if this new style will really become popular, as you can see in the streets and on the catwalks, it will indirectly have the opposite effect, which is to make all men inexorably equal, homologated by the utopian desire of self-affirmation.

We all aim at reference points in hard times. May be an idol that can give security and hope or a super hero with exceptional powers. But what if are we the ones to be special, unique and extraordinary? And fashion has the ability to transform us, to stimulate what is inside us, reawakening instincts and energies beyond every imagination.
Andrew Bolton, who is the curator of the exhibition held in 2008 at New York’s Metropolitan Museum, played in this dimension, examining the influence of comics in the fashion world and western style. The catalogue is divided in seven main sections: the graphic body, the patriotic body, the virile body, the paradoxical body, the armoured body, the aerodynamic body, the mutant body, the postmodern body. In addition to Micheal Chabon’s essay, each section is introduced by a sharp and exhaustive text. The graphic is powerful and explosive, in pure comics’ style, full of photos from the catwalks, movies and drawings from the great masters of the genre. But it is not over, even the sense of touch is satisfied, with pages with glossy and shiny feeling. So it is a collector’s item not to be missed, if you want to return a child or to fight for your right to dream!

8 Ties Project by Nob for Hermès

Hermès gets charmed by the web. A capsule collection of 8 ties, whose prints have been reinterpreted by the artist Miguel Chevalier, seals this new fellowship. But also an interactive installation and a virtual book will be part of the exhibition in Milan from October 17th to 27th at Palazzo Morando. The signs and symbols of the computer world are secretly revealed among plain stripes, regimental patterns and classic dots.
On this occasion we’ve been invited by Hermès to create a special story starting from Chevalier’s creative visions. We decided to offer you a graphic path, a dive into the history of art through those pioneers that, with their sensible skills, anticipated and perceived the cultural flickers of the ongoing digital era. Each image is a link, a mental discovery towards their thought, a tribute to their extraordinary intuitions. An ironic and cheerful journey before flying with our fantasy to the Hermès world.

Yves Klein affirmed: “For me blue is the colour of the video, a new arena for the art. It’s the colour of the empty screen and the space in which our new electronic world is contained”. An artist that was able to capture the immaterial, but experienceable soul of Internet, electronic bits and mp3 through this colour and its conceptual operations. A tone that maybe not only by chance puts together seven of the ties proposed by Chevalier and that is basically the connective tissue of this collection.

With Piero Manzoni’s isolated and taken out of context alphabets and calendars there is a deployment of the aseptic but potentially productive language of the computer, the binary code, based on zero and one, “on” and “off”.

Yoko Ono, during one of her performances, encouraged the public to: “Touch each other”. A collective and physical field of energy transmission that nowadays it has been multiplied almost to infinity and that can be traduced with the terms of network, web or, using Marshall McLuhan’s words, global village.

Come nel pattern in stile ecologista firmato Hermès.

Beuys showed himself as a shaman with the intent to re-establish a dialogue between humans and nature, connecting organic matter with cables, aerials and satellite dishes. His goal was to reconfigure life and senses. As in the ecologist-style pattern designed by Hermès.

What are you fighting for?

The fight has become a cliché in fashion photography.
Arthur Schulz was the first photographer that tickled the voyeurism of the consumers, through sport and battle scenes, showing in the ‘20s the nude physical presence of powerful and strong men. After almost a century, Bruce Weber, hiring a group of young models, seems to open the doors of a Greek Gymnasium or a brotherhood that is exploring its own force and above all its sexuality. And it is pretty impossible not to see in the hugs and clashes showed by both photographers the ambiguous alliance and intimacy between men that “it is without name – it is a word unsaid”, celebrated by Walt Whitman in “Leaves of Grass” and appeared in Thomas Eakins and Bruce Sargeant’s paintings.
Showing off virile and statuesque bodies with a compromising nearness and playing on the uncertainty in the definition of roles and sexual identities causes a short circuit. This is the perfect way to conquer the public of both genders and of any orientation. For all the photographers that absorbed Schulz and Weber’s lesson, this is a refined operation of marketing with a certain success.
