Cast Back: Herbert List vs Bruce Weber vs Mariano Vivanco

Herbert List - Sonnebad - 1955

Calvin Klein by Bruce Weber - 1982

Dolce & Gabbana S/S 2008 by Mariano Vivanco

In quell’occasione mi chiese: Dove vuoi realizzarla? […]

“When I had my first studio in New York, Calvin Klein asked me to shoot his underwear collection. In that occasion he added: Where do you want to realize the shooting? […] Then I had an idea: Herbert List and Santorini”. These are Bruce Weber’s words about a photo that has literally made the history of costume and photography. It happened in the ‘80s and seeing a half naked man on a placard of 20 meters for 30 in Times Square left its mark. It signed the acceptation of the nude and the adoration of the male body and self-worship came as a reply to the ideology crisis. This seems so far from the world of List, who used to keep his nudes hidden at his mother’s house in a sack where he wrote “poison bag”. Weber made an explicit tribute to List and also Mariano Vivanco with his Dolce & Gabbana’s ads. Despite the different time periods and the clear poses recall, what remains is the lifestyle proposed by the three photographers: the famous motto “mens sana in corpore sano” by Juvenal that seems a lifeline in these uncertain and fragile times.

Jordan Schiele - Jury's Special Mention Winner of Louis Vuitton Journeys Awards

What is your background and studies?
I studied Mandarin and Chinese in the UK and USA and then I moved to Shanghai to work as a translator and I had the opportunity to work on a film set as a translator and the idea of being part of making it inspired me. So I decided to go to a film school in Singapore, where I also made the film for this contest, and then I sort of moved back and forth between from Singapore and Beijing and Shanghai for the last five years. Now I’m mostly based in Beijing and I work as a director of photography, but I’m also working on my first feature film in Paris as a director. It’s a fiction one and it has been selected by the Cannes Film Festival for their residence program. So I am developing the project right now, looking for producers.

What were your inspirations for “Prank”?
I really began with the idea of encounters and with what they give us. And for creating a story I think about my personal experience, a face, a place, a story, a news article. So with this video I was just interested in the idea of a first encounter and specifically first encounter of a child, because it influences the way you think about the world for the rest of your life sometimes. And at the same time I found a teenager who wants to be an actor and is studying acting in Singapore. Something about meeting him gave me the idea of a story where he’s very open to the world, helping someone and he has a strange experience that backlashes at the end because when he is opened to the world, it sort of closes off then.

What are the difficulties in creating this project? Did you have any problem with the young actor?
I think the problems of any film are connected to the fact that what you imagine, what happens and what you create at the end are all different things. I was very lucky because as a director lots of your work comes before filming: working on your film with a photographer, casting locations and faces. In this case I knew the child, his expressions and the way that he walks. I work on details as a director. I really cast him for the feeling this boy gave me. So working with children in this case was ok. He’s very willing and sweet boy. I actually had really a few problems with this project, probably the biggest challenge was dealing with the light because in Singapore light changes very quickly.

Which are your future projects?
I think I will not be a translator anymore. I am devoting my career to film-making, but not just directing. This is my dream. Whenever I had the opportunity to, time and money, interest and a script I hope to work on that completely. But I’m also interested in image and imaginary as a director of photography. How I satisfy my interest in film is by looking for opportunities to make my features so the feature film that I’m working on, which is a thriller fiction film set in China, is probably something I’ll work on next year too.

Alexis Willis - People Choice's Award Winner of Louis Vuitton Journeys Awards

Can you tell us a little bit about your studies and your background? Or if you do something else in your life.
In fact I am not a film-maker yet. I studied product design, I am a product designer and after several years of work I wanted to develop a passion, artistic activities next to my work. Something different. I’ve been doing quite a lot of photography and with the photography gear now you can also film. So I started to play with my camera and decided to go further and share the film for the Journeys Awards, infact this is my first film. So with my wife Marion, who is a graphic designer and illustrator, we are changing lives now and creating a company together and the idea is to still do product design, graphic design and try to film also.
Filming is complete. You have the thinking, the writing, to understand people and things and after you have to draw your ideas and after you have to film, to edit, you work with different people. What I really like is the mixing between the images and music.

And a difficult thing about the music is that you have to own the copyrights.
Yeah, so that’s why Alexandre, who is the other guy that was there before, wrote the music and we really worked together everything at the same time. We didn’t create the images and then the music after, everything was made at once. And yes, it was a great project and then finally this project participated to my choice of changing life.

Can we also know the inspirations and the difficulties in making such a complex video?
First of all the theme of this competition is really inspiring because it is a complete open theme. And when you hear the briefing of the contest, it opens even more because it tells you can go in this direction or not in that direction. After it was more thinking about what is an encounter and the first ideas were about our individualistic society. And so we decided to work on a person who meets himself. We really liked in Louis Vuitton the connection with the travel, which is inspiring. This is why we decided to work in two different places and while we were writing we understood that you could meet just by emotions, two people that live same emotions at the same time and the connection of that moment. The other idea in the video is that the guy needs to go in the nature and to find himself and to be with himself and to conquer himself, while the girl is more living in this pressured society and she is pushed to go and discover herself and escape. Same emotions pushed by two different points of view. So I hope people understood and appreciated it.

How did you find the protagonists of your story?
It’s funny but we didn’t look for simplicity. We wrote the story we wanted to write and after in our contacts searched for the right people. The guy is my neighbour and he had the face we were looking for and the girl is a friend of the other film-maker of the project.

Which was your reaction when you found out that you won People’s Choice Award?
It can only be a good feeling and what I really want to say is that there is my name on the film and it has been a real intense team project. Everything was intense and we decided to do the film three weeks before the end of the competition. So everything went really fast, we had to be really connected. After we learnt that we were in the 10 shortlisted movies and then after we won the prize all the experience is completely positive, especially for being our first film. Simply amazing. It also makes me think about my approach to filming and the fact that we worked with no pressure and we tried to put emotion into the images and stuff. That’s why maybe the project worked. If you have no pressure and you create something on your own, is a really good way to work.

What will you do with your cash prize?
We are creating our company so we will invest money in our company and gears.

Yukinori Makabe Interview - Jury's Award Winner of Louis Vuitton Journeys Awards

Come è nato il video “The Sun and the Moon”, premiato ai Journeys Awards?

Yukinori Makabe has been awarded winner of the second edition of the Journeys Awards by the jury headed by Luca Guadagnino, during the prize ceremony held in Rome on 8th November in the Maison Etoile of Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina. This Louis Vuitton contest has the aim to stimulate the work of young filmmakers, and in this edition the main theme has been based on encounters, which are a core value of the journey and linked to Vuitton world. A patronage mission that offered a huge visibility and also economical support of $25.000 to Yukinori Makabe, as Jury’s Award winner, and Alexis Willis for People Choice’s Award. With a Jury’s special mention to Jordan Schiele. Three names to remember cause these directors will surely leave a mark soon.
Let’s start with our meeting with the Japanese Yukinori Makabe, flawless and dapper chic in his tuxedo.

Which is your background?
When I was a university student I shot my first movie. Then I graduated and started working for the film company that produced it. Then I worked as an assistant director and later I went in for tv series.

How did you start thinking about “The Sun and the Moon”, prized at the Journeys Awards?
I filmed the eclipse that there was on May 21st 2012. Later I thought about the plot for this contest, starting exactly from this suggestive moment that has inspired me. A week after the eclipse I shot the scenes with the children.

Did you find any technical problem during the realization?
The eclipse filming has been the most difficult part. Because it was necessary that the image wouldn’t become too much bright or shadowy, and without possibilities to film it again, considering the uniqueness of the event.

How do you think to invest the cash prize?
I would love to realize a full-length movie. I still don’t have any particular idea in mind. The only thing I know it that this story will not be sad, but it will make people smile.

Luca Guadagnino Interview - Louis Vuitton Journeys Awards in collaboration with Rome Film Festival - Intervista a Luca Guadagnino

Leggo tra le maggiori testate nazionali e internazionali, come repubblica.it, ilmanifesto.it, corriere.it e tra i blogger The Sartorialist. Ora per assurdo siamo tutti vestiti come The Sartorialist.

Producer, scriptwriter, director and now jury president for the last edition of the Journeys Awards, which is a contest promoted by Louis Vuitton to support young filmmakers.
Undoubtedly Luca Guadagnino, born in 1971, has the talent for cinema. “Melissa P.” gave him fame, but “I am love” with Tilda Swinton made him gain the favour of the critics, heading him towards two important nominations, best foreign language film at the Golden Globes and best costume design at the Oscars. We sat next to him, while in the Roman Louis Vuitton’s Etoile space movie theatre all the winner’s short films were going over. Luca Guadagnino, in first person, tried to make us feel comfortable, showing politeness and elegance. Since the first questions he appeared mysterious, enigmatic, as an artist with a multi-faceted and subtle mind, whose words enclose a further rich, complex, deep and extraordinarily fascinating world.

When did you start loving cinema? When did you decide to fully invest in it?
The cinema is my life. I am what I do. I have never seen this kind of job as a way of investment. I didn’t invest anything. This is my way of being. A lot of my colleagues invested in some way, attended schools of cinematic arts, followed a standard path and usually, according to their talent, this is visible in their work. I have always wanted to do cinema, since I was a child. I also had a little super eight when I was 8 years old. I have never done anything without a true, authentic and inner vocation.

Which are the movies that marked your path?
I can name those films that come to my mind in this moment. “Elephant Man” by David Lynch, “1900” by Bertolucci, “Sunrise: a Song of two Humans” by Murnau. But as these three, there could be other 200. The idea of charts is so typical of a late global capitalism.

Which is the role that the cinema has in our present times and in general in the history, according to you?
The cinema always reflects the here and now. The cinema is so, if it shows the expression of a desire, collective or individual. And fashion does it too.

Is there a recurring research, a final aim at the base of your work?
I think that it is important to be always able to keep immediacy, an urgency of doing, even when you have to realize a full-length film that needs long studies and a deep grounding.

Which is your relationship with the web?
I read most of national and international headlines, such as repubblica.it, ilmanifesto.it, corriere.it and blogs such as The Sartorialist. In my opinion it is a bit stark blog, but the photos are really beautiful. It all began with shots taken to people dressed in their own style. Nowadays we are all dressed like The Sartorialist. It is nonsensical and unbearable.

Which is your point of view about digital technologies applied to fashion and cinema?
For example Louis Vuitton is able to realize objects of huge delight and desire also using highly technological fabrics. In the cinema world, technology allows a stricter selection because its usage is more accessible, and this gives the direct possibility to young filmmakers to do and in a better quality. From here, the substantial differences emerge between those who own a visual, narrative or aesthetic background in their minds.

What did you appreciate in particular about this Louis Vuitton initiative ?
Louis Vuitton decided to convey their name in a very clever way, with the double astonishing result of becoming a patron for young filmmakers, maybe one of the reasons for which we should appreciate the capitalism, and from the other side to have found strong personalities that will surely become someone in the immediate future. And then the complete creative freedom that they left to the directors, starting from a theme that is part of Vuitton DNA.

Why did you and the other Journeys Awards jury members decide to award Yukinori Makabe with the Jury’s Prize?
For his ability and gentleness in conceiving the idea of journey in space and time, with an uncommon point of view: the solar eclipse, the friendship between two boys, maybe the love between these two boys, and the memory of their childhood. All is so magic, without losing deepness.

Which is your relationship with fashion?
Comfort is essential in my lifestyle. I have a lot of friends working in the fashion industry, always searching for new deep inspirations, not superficial ones, and I have learnt that the trends never come as a result of a cold upline plan, but as hot choices at an intuitive level. If then even from a small part of a designer’s collection starts a recodification of the sense of clothing and wearing clothes, I find it extremely mind-blowing.

Camouflage

In the military activities the camouflage fatigues have the aim to uniform men with the surrounding environment, hiding them. And as every uniform, to pull down the differences and barriers between soldiers in the respect of all companions in arms, joined in a homogeneous group with the same goal. But what if there were no ideology to fight for?
Nowadays humans unconsciously struggle for the only creed in which they really believe: self-worship and adoration of their image. Every behaviour is a declination of aesthetic egotism, truly shared and collective. The mud and grass pattern, elegantly defined camo, is able to adjust like a chameleon to reality and it inverts its original function and acquires a new meaning, becoming a trumpet call to catch the attention in the urban greyness. But if this new style will really become popular, as you can see in the streets and on the catwalks, it will indirectly have the opposite effect, which is to make all men inexorably equal, homologated by the utopian desire of self-affirmation.
