Confortevole, pratica, economica, creativa, fai da te. Così nasce la tuta, quando nel 1919 il futurista fiorentino Ernesto Michahelles, noto come Thayaht, crea insieme al fratello RAM un “capo universale”, democratico, semplice da realizzare e dal carattere eversivo, che vuole liberare l’uomo dal gusto e dai codici borghesi del primo dopoguerra. Il frutto dell’ingegno di un artista che è stato preso in prestito dalle sfere militari, dagli aviatori e da tutti quegli uomini che per esigenze lavorative devono necessariamente sporcarsi le mani. Appare nelle sfilate di moda negli anni settanta con Paco Rabanne, intento a definire la divisa di viaggiatori spaziali, per divenire un must-have negli anni ottanta con Enrico Coveri, che risponde alle esigenze di un’intera generazione improntata all’esaltazione della plasticità del corpo e, quindi, desiderosa di movimento. Ma è negli ultimi anni che la tuta intera è stata totalmente rivisitata in chiave luxury, perdendo anche parte del suo ribelle DNA. Dal cotone del modello originale ai tessuti più pregiati, fino a dettagli preziosi e stampe floreali. L’estate 2012 poi ne è l’apoteosi, con Dolce & Gabbana, Dries Van Noten, Giuliano Fujiwara, Arnys, Adam Kimmel, Tim Hamilton, Qasimi, Loden Dager e Timo Weiland. Inutile dire che è difficile immaginarsi un uomo coperto di grasso e sudore, modellato da sforzo fisico e fatica, come negli scatti anni ottanta di Herb Ritts. Eppure, anche in queste versioni più chic, ciò che permane è la medesima tempra d’acciaio di un’identità maschia e virile.
Comfortable, handy, cheap, creative and do-it-yourself. This is what the Florentine Futurist Ernesto Michahelles, whose nickname was Thayat, and his brother RAM thought in 1919 when they decided to create the jumpsuit: an “universal item”, democratic, easy to make and with a strong nature, able to free men from the first postwar’s bourgeois tastes and codes. Afterwards military spheres, aviators and all the workers who get their hands dirty have adopted this figment. It first appeared on the catwalk in the ‘70s with Paco Rabanne, with the aim to define the uniform for space travels, then it became a must-have item in the ‘80s with Enrico Coveri because it fulfilled the needs of a whole generation based on the physical fitness and exercise. But in the latest years the jumpsuit has been revisited from the original cotton one to luxury models with fine fabrics, precious details and floral prints, losing part of its rebel DNA. At its peak for summer 2012 with Dolce & Gabbana, Dries Van Noten, Giuliano Fujiwara, Arnys, Adam Kimmel, Tim Hamilton, Qasimi, Loden Dager and Timo Weiland. Needless to say that it is difficult to imagine a man covered with grease and sweat, shaped by efforts and hard work, as in Herb Ritts’ shots during the Eighties. Nevertheless what remains, even in these fashionable versions, is the same steely temperament of a masculine and virile identity.
