What is a carré?
It’s the name given to its squared silk scarves (90x90 cm / 70x70 cm) by Hermès in 1937. It’s the result of 450ooo metres of silk which are equivalent to 300 cocoons born by 300 little eggs. The mother is just one butterfly. It’s the math of beauty: 1 butterfly = 1 carré. But the perfect rationality and geometry of this wonderful object doesn’t influence the fluidity and lightness of its shapes and purposes.
You can think that a carré is like an origami to play with, but useful like a swiss pocket-knife. The best functionality with unequaled aesthetic.
A passepartout to transform every circumstance, or inconvenience, in a style instant.
Do you have a spot on your shirt? A carré will be your tie to cover it.
Do you want to be elegant enjoying a cocktail? A carré will be your handkerchief.
Is a flurry coming? A carré will protect you.
Such versatility was so relevant that many contemporary artists like Fernando Gutiérrez, Tokujin Yoshioka, Becky Cocks and Mathieu Mercier used this precious piece of silk to create new masterpieces of art.
In this continuous variability, the carré honors his origins, as if every time you open your drawer a new butterfly comes out of its chrysalis.

CINEMA, MUSIC & SPORT

"Dressing in Dolce & Gabbana is a declaration of love for the cinema," said Gary Oldman. In fact with the duo it is always an amazing journey back in dreams, literature and customs of the great Italian films. The collaboration for the spot of "Sicily" with Giuseppe Tornatore in 2003 and the use of Baarìa's movie for their fall-winter 2010 menswear show are remarkable moments in fashion history and a perfect example of this amazing union. Madonna said with incisive words: "Now that Fellini, Rossellini, Pasolini, Visconti are gone, all we have is the neorealist fashion of Dolce & Gabbana".
Since 1993 the undisputed queen of pop has been collaborating with two designers, when they drew the 1,500 costumes for her “Girlie Show tour”. As you can see, Dolce & Gabbana don’t only speak the language of the great cinema, but also one of music and sport because the celebrities are an integral part of their language, testimonials of a lush and fabulous lifestyle. For the music, the cd entitled “D&G Music” of '96 and the single “D&G More More More” of '97 are still memorable. Another famous collaboration was with Kylie Minogue, in which they created all the clothes for the 2002 European “Fever tour” and for the 2006 “Showgirl Homecoming Tour”. The initiative “DG Set” was launched in 2008, where big international DJs transform the elegant boutiques into spaces for music, dancing and exclusive meetings.
If Hollywood stars are idols for women, sportsmen are heroes for men. From this simple but brilliant idea Dolce & Gabbana initiated the conceptual marriage between fashion and sport, sealed with the figure of David Beckham. The famous soccer player identified with the metrosexual type, a polished man, conscious of his own sex-appeal and subject of constant contention with another big fashion designer, Giorgio Armani. In 2004 they released the book “Calcio”, soccer players and referees under the lens of Mariano Vivanco, until firming A.C. Milan and Italian national team’s wardrobe. In 2007 they dressed National Chinese team for the Olympics, with careful attention to the Chinese market. In 2008 it was the turn of the oval ball, with the Randall Mesdon shots for D&G underwear line. They wanted to create a model of a worthy, healthy, clean man. The stars were the five players of the Italian rugby team photographed at the Jean Bouin Stadium in Paris. Then the designers launched the book “Milano Beach Soccer” and the official uniforms for the Italian team players who win the 2006 and 2007 championships. In the same year they designed the pink jersey for the Giro d’Italia centenary, with the logo in full view on the collar. In 2009, the year of the World Aquatics Championships in Rome, Mariano Vivanco photographed the Italian national swimming team for the Dolce & Gabbana underwear campaign.
Whatever the current sport is, Dolce & Gabbana seize every opportunity.

"Dolce & Gabbana Chronicles Part II"- Style

Clara Calamai and Massimo Girotti in Ossessione (1943)

STYLE

Dolce & Gabbana, as Gianluca Lo Vetro clearly said, opposed the pauperistic aesthetics of the neorealist style to the fashionable and flamboyant imagery of the career woman of the eighties. Thanks to them the sicilian look and its regional details have become a real global style to wear. A world of contradictions which aims toward new and unexpected visions. "The style of Dolce & Gabbana is full of surprises and it is created on contrasts between classical and explosive, sexy but serene. A revolutionary fashion", said Naomi Campbell. Exactly the same thought as Stefano Gabbana, who argues: "We cannot do one style, it is unnatural, nobody wants to be always just the same". But what remains constant is the evocation of Southern Italy. "We want to use the past but project toward the future," added the two designers.

WOMEN

"Dolce & Gabbana interpret and reinvent the sexy Italian woman. The changing look shows the most brilliant part of their style. With the clothes of Domenico and Stefano, you just open the wardrobe to change personality!" said Linda Evangelista.

THE INNOCENT SICILIAN GIRL

MEN

"With their men's fashion, Dolce & Gabbana have not only reinterpreted the street, but the whole world behind it, giving us nobs, bandits, Sicilian shepherds, Neapolitan rogues, Jean Cocteau and Jack Kerouac. During this evolution they have created a new aristocracy of masculine style", said James Truman. Dolce & Gabbana have defined the figure of a sexy man, who uses his body as a weapon of pleasure and seduction. He is metrosexual or not, but always manly and confident. A man who loves to show off fine sparkling clothes under the stars, when the nightlife made of cocktails, disco and parties starts.

Dolce & Gabbana begun their extraordinary career by sending marzipan prickly pears and tissue paper of Sicilian oranges as invitations to their fashion shows and offering dinners on plates from Caltagirone. Saying that they have showed creativity and spirit of initiative from the beginning is a euphemism. If it is said that fortune favors the bold, Dolce & Gabbana are true examples of courage for all.

ESSENTIAL STORY
Domenico Dolce was born in 1958 in Polizzi Generosa, Palermo. He learnt to sew at the age of seven years thanks to his father Saverio, who had a small clothing company. Stefano Gabbana was born in Milan in 1962 and following in the footsteps of his father he decided to study graphics. A partnership of intent bloomed from their first meeting at the club Amnesia and when they were invited by Beppe Modenese to Milan for New Talent Collections in 1985, the brand Dolce & Gabbana was paraded for the first time. The collection represented the archetypal woman of Sicily, Dolce’s homeland and the place of summer vacation and love affairs for Gabbana. The first men’s collection was created in ‘90, followed in ’94 by D & G line, for young people, and by D & G Junior, shown at Pitti Bimbo in Florence in '99. The last two are more closely associated with street fashion, closer to the trend of the season and dominated by the logo. Since 2000 several corners have opened around the world, including Beverly Hills, Miami, Piazza di Spagna in Rome, Venice, Riccione, Munich and in 2003 they created an area of three floors in Corso Venezia in Milan, not just a store, but a real men’s club with Sicilian barber and fitness center with massages. In the same year they launched the new fragrance Sicily Dolce & Gabbana. The face of the advertising campaign was the Italian actress Monica Bellucci, directed by Giuseppe Tornatore in a beautiful spot with music by Ennio Morricone. In 2005 the two designers brought back the Metropol, a historic cinema in Milan in the late forties to its former glory, and now used for fashion shows and events. In 2006 the Gold, which is a space dedicated to the culinary sphere, was inaugurated in Milan. Swide was published in 2008 and it is the online magazine of the brand. In 2009 they offered the first make-up set with Scarlett Johansson as the face, photographed by Sølve Sundsbø, promoting the exhibition about fashion photography Extreme Beauty In Vogue. On 23rd June 2010 they launched dandgstore.com, the first online boutique of the brand. For autumn-winter 2010 they went back to their roots, using background music and scenes from Giuseppe Tornatore’s film Baarìa. “We care little for the clothes – they said provocatively – we aim for feelings. An overwhelming story of love for fashion that will never die."
