Real Men in Fashion

"Put the clothes on your friends. Put them on the people you really admire and find intelligent. Or do portraits of your family".
These are the words of the fashion photographer Bruce Weber, as quoted in an interview dated 1992, that with his fresh and spontaneous shots defined a personal style. If we consider recent times’ menswear collections, this concept has been taken literally.
Alexandre Mattiussi named his line AMI, as friend, using fabrics and colours to immortalize in a shot the lives of the people close to him.
Stefano Ughetti for Camo and Luca Larenza present lifelike models, whose stories are written all over their faces.
Prada had famous actors on its catwalk, such as Willem Dafoe, Gary Oldman, Adrien Brody and Jamie Bell.
Brioni proposed noteworthy personalities, in a presentation half a tableau vivant half a reality show.
Umit Benan makes a lifestyle out of his own roots. “Each season I show the same man. Maybe he is my father, my uncle, a friend of mine, but always part of the same family”, he told us in a past meeting.
Berluti brought to mind nineteenth-century portraiture with cartes de visite, to hold on to the heart.
Undoubtedly in times of crisis if the mountain will not come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the mountain. The fashion system gets down from Mount Olympus and makes pacts with folks. A behaviour similar to that one towards aged men, as we talked some time ago. So we want to repost the same question: is it sign of breaking with the classical aesthetic principles or ephemeral passing trend?

Still from "Immortals" - 2011

L'Olimpo rispose all'invocazione. E divennero calzature, metalliche e fiammanti come armature lucenti.

We have already talked about these affairs, their heroes and legendary deeds (read here). So we are not here to celebrate a fashion trend, but its epic.
Pierre Cardin was the first one to set down his knight on the earth, then the aoidoi invoked the Muses: Galliano’s pharaonic fashion show for Dior, Aphrodite embodied in Kylie Minogue, up to a divine Madonna at Super Bowl. Mount Olympus heard their call. Jupiter’s thunderbolts fell down from the sky, as Vulcan forged them in the dark depths of the earth. And they became shoes, as much metallic and flaming as shiny body armours.
