Mirrors and Twins - The Uncanny Beauty of Double in Fashion

Specchi e gemelli.

Mirrors and twins. The fashion system falls in love with the theme of the double, including narcissistic visions and real models x2.
In 2010 Alexander McQueen proposed on the catwalk iconic symmetric prints, alike in the appeal to the Rorschach images that are used to test the psychology and personality of a person. From that moment the fashion world has never stopped adoring all that is specular. As a continuous introspective research.
According to Lacan the mirror has a real important influence in the construction of our own identity. And always in the psychoanalysis, the figure of the alter ego would be linked to the necessity to control the fear of death, embodying a sort of duplication of the life itself. But the will to fixate on the life reaffirms its absence and transience, and the double from defence against the death becomes its annunciation. The bitter destiny of the beautiful Narcissus works as parable of an ill-omened presage. At the same time, as in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the double would represent the objectification of desired and repressed fantasies.
And in effect isn’t fashion a container of a virtual dimension in which we want to identify, as a mirror of dreams sometimes realizable? Doesn’t it try to stop the time, to crystallize the beauty and youth in aeternum? So fashion attracts and frightens us, retaking ancestral fears and reflecting on itself. The perturb fashion looks in the mirror.

Plumage
