Yukinori Makabe è stato premiato dalla giuria preseduta da Luca Guadagnino come vincitore della seconda edizione dei Journeys Awards, che si sono tenuti a Roma l’8 novembre presso la Maison Etoile in piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina. Un concorso lanciato da Louis Vuitton per incentivare il lavoro dei giovani cineasti, chiamati a realizzare un corto sul tema dell’incontro, anima stessa del viaggio e quindi parte integrante dello spirito Vuitton. Una missione di mecenatismo che ha offerto una vetrina senza precedenti, ma anche un sostegno monetario di $25.000, assegnati dalla giuria a Yukinori Makabe, e dal pubblico ad Alexis Willis. Una menzione speciale è stata data a Jordan Schiele. Tre nomi che dovremo imparare perchè questi tre registi lasceranno presto il segno.
Ma partiamo dal nostro di incontro con il giapponese Yukinori Makabe, impeccabile ed elegantissimo nel suo smoking.
Quale è il tuo background?
Quando ero studente all’Università ho realizzato il mio primo film. Dopo di che mi sono laureato e sono andato a lavorare per la casa che lo ha prodotto. Ho svolto il ruolo di aiuto-regista e ho cominciato a dedicarmi ai telefilm.
Come è nato il video “The Sun and the Moon”, premiato ai Journeys Awards?
Il 21 maggio del 2012 c’è stata un’eclisse e l’ho filmata. Successivamente ho pensato alla storia per questo concorso, partendo proprio da questo suggestivo momento che mi ha ispirato. Una settimana dopo l’eclisse ho girato le scene con i bambini.

È stato molto complesso riprendere l’eclisse. Perché era necessario che l’immagine non diventasse troppo luminosa oppure ombrosa, senza possibilità di altri tentativi, data l’eccezionalità dell’evento.

Come pensi di utilizzare il premio monetario vinto?
Vorrei realizzare un lungometraggio. Ancora non ho in mente qualcosa di preciso. Ciò che è certo è che non sarà una storia triste, ma farà sorridere.

Yukinori Makabe has been awarded winner of the second edition of the Journeys Awards by the jury headed by Luca Guadagnino, during the prize ceremony held in Rome on 8th November in the Maison Etoile of Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina. This Louis Vuitton contest has the aim to stimulate the work of young filmmakers, and in this edition the main theme has been based on encounters, which are a core value of the journey and linked to Vuitton world. A patronage mission that offered a huge visibility and also economical support of $25.000 to Yukinori Makabe, as Jury’s Award winner, and Alexis Willis for People Choice’s Award.
