Un messaggio subliminale che ai più è passato inconsapevolmente sotto gli occhi per diverse stagioni, soprattutto utilizzando la celeberrima bandiera a stelle e strisce. La motivazione di questa presenza può essere cercata in un procedimento utilizzato da un grande artista New Dada come Jasper Johns, che utilizzò nel 1958 questo simbolo per dipingere le famose “Three Flags”, tre bandiere statunitensi sovrapposte le une alle altre. In questo modo decontestualizzò un oggetto divenuto ormai anestetico, perché perfettamente inserito in uno scenario abituale, per congelarlo e dargli nuova luce porgendolo ai fruitori come per la prima volta. Eppure non presentò la bandiera come un ready–made cioè un oggetto già fatto, ma utilizzando una tecnica pittorica molto complessa ed elaborata. Oggi i fotografi mutuano questa poetica, offrendo ad una società disincantata, quale siamo, una porzione di realtà che abbiamo dimenticato, facendoci riscoprire ideali e valori connessi ad una bandiera, ma anche i limiti e le fragilità di un paese ricco di contraddizioni. Sempre con uno stile raffinato e studiato, senza improvvisazioni. Come ha fatto con grazia lo stilista e ora video-maker Hedi Slimane per il sito The Corner. Una dichiarazione d’amore attraverso una critica poetica. Una denuncia che palesa semplicemente attenzione, indiscutibile affetto, come quella di un padre per un figlio.

Uncle Sam’s exhortation resounds as a command in the fashion photography. But with new meanings…
A subliminal message that has unconsciously passed under the eyes of many people for several seasons, in particular with the employment of “The Stars and Stripes”. The reason of this presence can be searched in a Jasper Johns’ procedure. He was a notable Neo-Dadaist artist that in 1958 used this symbol to paint “Three Flags”, three concentric US flags, one inside the others. In this way he took this object out of its almost anaesthetic context, because perfectly embedded in usual sceneries, freezing and putting it a new light, given to the users as if for the first time. Nevertheless he presented the flag with complex and processed pictorial techniques and not as a ready-made object. Nowadays photographers borrow this poetics, offering to such a disenchanted society a portion of reality that we have forgotten, just to let us discover ideals and values connected to a flag, but also to the limits and weaknesses related to a country full of contradictions. Always with a refined and well-thought style, without improvisation. As the fashion designer and now video-maker Hedi Slimane daintily did for The Corner.com. A declaration of love through a poetical criticism. A complaint that simply reveals attention, indisputable fondness, as the one of a father towards his son.
