Z Zegna S/S 2011

Have you ever had the sensation to enter stealthily through an inaccessible place, as if you were violating a moral code or breaking the seal of a letter whose content is exclusively private? Well, Nob had the same exciting sensation mixed to reverence when on 22nd June Zegna opened its doors to a few elected bloggers. An exclusive meeting with the new media, at the 100th anniversary from the brand foundation.
The shudder was the same that Mary Lennox had in “The secret garden” of Frances Hodgson Burnett, when she sneaked in that enchanted world. The master of the house and creative designer of Z Zegna is Alessandro Sartori, that is as well a virtuous keeper of the fruits of a firm with such a flourishing history that is almost legendary. The flowers that have just bloomed, are now coming out in a futuristic lawn made of elegant grey nuances, avant-garde fabrics and three-button jackets or double breasted, they are brick-red suits, little poppies to pick up during a hot and plush summer day. And if this is not enough, we have discovered the astonishing three-dimensional effect of the fabric employed for the iconic item of the collection. Luminescent as a butterfly’s wings.

Why did you choose this distinctive brick-red colour?
We were interested in a male colour. Something new and colourful, but wearable. This tone distinguishes itself from other red and orange shades, overseen on the catwalk and it worked perfectly with the grey we absolutely wanted for this summer 2011 collection. The brick-red colours belts, bags and shoes too.

Speaking on shoes. The soles in bright and contrasting colours seem to be one of the new trends for next summer. Even at Zegna there is this detail. Tell us more about it.
This is a detail on which we have been working for several seasons. I like to separate the soles and the shoes. I think that when the outsole leans on the ground it gives a soft look to the silhouette, not modern or masculine at all. Making thicker soles and above all colouring them let exalt the stride and the power of the shoes.

For this spring-summer 2010 collection Z Zegna man is a Victorian age dandy, while during next year he will wear soberer shapes…
The spring-summer 2010 collection had a huge success, but proposing it again would have meant repeating ourselves. The Z Zegna man is still a dandy, but without exasperation. The dandyism remains a thin and constant thread, expressed in different ways. His own eccentricity is not showed through the creased raffia hats or the bicoloured shoes, but he crumples his jacket or wears his own jacket of five years ago.

Which are the elements from Zegna archives you prefer working on the most?
They are two. First of all the textile aspect. In the Zegna archives there are resounding fabrics, wonderful for their chromaticity and draw, but the technologies in the past didn’t allow for example to make them as light as they are today. Then the tailor’s manufacturing.

In the creative process is it the draw to influence the choice of the fabrics or the other way round?
Both the aspects are important. First of all the pure draw, the silhouette research and the proportions.
We have conceived this collection between December and January. After this step we started the research on the proper materials. Just think that for this collection we made about one thousand prototypes and for the fashion show two hundred and fifty. But the materials can influence the shapes too, as it has happened when we employed the paper in some of our items. In that case the draw came after.

In regard of new eco friendly materials and fabrics…
All we can do about this without having it as an essential requirement. The style comes first. If we can work on it with three-dimensional technologies, paper and wires, it is even better.

Among the men of past and present, artists and common men, who is the one that embodies the ideal Z Zegna man?
The one who has always been a source of inspiration for me is Marcello Mastroianni because he has a timeless elegance. But today if we think about him, we also think about the glamour of these years, Rome and a certain atmosphere. I would say that Z Zegna man is a street artist, an actor, a painter, a person that lives the elegance in his own way and that has his own personal style.
