Downton Abbey Style for Men - Lo stile degli uomini di Downton Abbey

The multi-award winning British television series Downton Abbey shows its fashionable side.
Alexander McQueen, Alexis Mabille and Berluti invite us to Crawley family’s ancient abode, at the beginning of the twentieth century between the Edwardian era and the roaring twenties. Among creaky staircases, wooden bookcases and crackling fireplaces, a complex period appears, marked by the decline of the dominant classes’ well-being and a growing awareness of the lowest social classes’ rights. The dominant colours are black and white, both parts of the servants’ uniform, but also of the evening dress of the wealthy English men, composed by tailcoat, waistcoat and bowtie. What is shared between the two categories is the sense of male style as a matter related to the moderation and sobriety, following the lesson given by the previous Victorian age.
Does this imaginary, seen on the recent catwalks, identify a troubled and shocking period similar to the current one? Is the influence of a sweet nostalgia to capture us in a close but yet so far time to believe it real? Maybe this is the reaction to a slick and fruitless present, a reply to a romantic, spontaneous and fanciful desire to believe in something, in values and ideals, permeated of fury, love and feelings.

Men's Collar - Menwear Trends Fall/Winter 2013-14 - Tendenze Moda Uomo Autunno/Inverno 2013-14

"Shivaji" - 1680 ca

Miharayasuhiro F/W 2013-14

Are you curious to know which is the seasonal trend for the upcoming winter? Undoubtedly the collar.
Until the ‘30s the collar and the cuffs used to be buttoned up as separate elements from the shirt, a practical idea to allow a faster cleaning of the parts in direct contact with the skin. Indeed the white collar became a real symbol of social climbing when the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie made it a sign of wealth. A far memory of the more magnificent sixteenth-century ruff, worn with self-confidence by the Spanish nobility and aristocracy. Or even better a reminiscence of the sober and measured garments of the Dutch merchants, whose stiff and minimal collars contributed to represent the moral strictness of the new rising class. Exactly in Rembrandt’s portraits it is possible to remark another detail of the fashion of that time: metallic collars of shiny armours, as almost virile necklaces. In general in the uniforms, which are synonym of order and respectability, the fabric around the neck has always been one of the few spaces granted to frivolousness and distinction of army, rank and regiment.
For the winter 2013-14, many fashion designers aimed at the collar, reinventing it with new fabrics and colours. Rigid, graphic and in contrast by Carven, Iceberg and Jil Sander. Voluminous, structured and eclectic by Miharayasuhiro. Purplish by Raf Simons and Alexander McQueen. Ascetic and oriental by Neil Barrett.
It can be considered a subtle luxury research, a dandy mannerism, in balance between the exhibitionism and the dutiful austerity needed today.

Omega Experience - Museum in Bienne and Factory in Grenchen

Who can be proud of a stellar story? Omega.
An almost ancestral name, whose sound today awakens notes established in the memory itself. The birth of one of the most famous watchmaking brands took place in 1848. A path that is nearly legendary, if you think that in 1969 the Omega Speedmaster has been the first watch to land on the moon. A multitude of stars, whose existence was connected to Omega, supported this epochal moment. Lawrence of Arabia, Elvis Presley, the president Kennedy, are some of the most famous costumers who contributed the creation of a constellation of names that followed the activity of the Swiss company. We at Nob had the opportunity to travel and to be charmed by the aura of the most extraordinary celebrities and amazing watches that they wore. Thanks to Omega, that guided us in its museum in Bienne, the first one dedicated to a only one watches brand. A history of precision and taste for the design that shows the evolution of the society itself, from the nineteenth century up to now. From the precious pocket watches in Art Deco style to the sculptural work of Salvador Dalì, from the diamond watch realized for the princess Juliana of the Netherlands until the contemporary testimonials as Cindy Crawford, Nicole Kidman and George Clooney. And the presence of Omega continues on the big screen with the high technological models put on by 007. A real attraction towards a name that is a point of reference in the field, born not only for the aesthetic sense of the products, but also for its incredible functionality and guarantee of reliability that Omega has always been offering, so much that it has been the official Olympic timekeeper since 1932. We entered the assembly line in Grenchen, where the entire fabrication process is based. The extreme accuracy is almost sacred. To advance we had to put on a hairnet and a lab coat because the air is controlled to avoid alterations and disturbances in the gears that dust and humidity could cause. At the end of the day, drinking a glass of absence, we visited the Maison Blanche, which is a building designed by Le Corbusier at the beginning of his career, where all the elements of his architectural revolution are visible. And if this was not enough, the following day we built a watch with our own hands, entering in the heart and soul of the gearwheels, attending to its first beat. A work of balance and harmony, of joint and soft movements, that almost seems to enshrine the incredible mystery of life.
