Lee Miller in Vogue by Georges Lepape - 1927Hollywood, 1927. George Valentin è una stella del cinema muto. La gloria e il successo sembrano arridergli, ma i tempi sono destinati a cambiare. Insieme al fortuito incontro con l'affascinante Peppy Miller, sta per incombere il peso di una nuova scoperta: il sonoro, che lo destinerà all'inevitabile oblio. Questa la trama di "The Artist", film muto di Michel Hazanavicius, in uscita prossimamente nelle sale italiane e specchio fedele delle passerelle delle prossime stagioni.
Il mito americano ha già mostrato le sue crepe con "Il grande Gatsby" di Francis Scott Fitzgerald del 1925. Sono gli stessi anni in cui l'America passa dai "roaring Twenties" di ottimismo, benessere e consumismo, al crollo della borsa di New York del 1929. La fascia medio-alta viene duramente colpita e inizia la recessione dei consumi, mentre i divi di Hollywood e i gangster movies diventano i nuovi punti di riferimento in fatto di stile. Nell'arte, razionalismo e modernismo stimolano gli audaci tagli grafici delle fotografie di Edward Steichen. Un periodo storico quanto mai congruente al presente clima di austerity provocato dalla crisi economica e dalle vertiginose oscillazioni del mercato. L'uomo contemporaneo chiede quindi a gran voce certezze e sobrietà, e le ritrova nei look dalle fogge anni venti e trenta. Frac, papillon, cilindro, camicia bianca e scarpe bicolori per la sera. Giacche dagli ampi rever appuntiti e panciotto per il giorno, oppure gessato o doppiopetto. La varietà sta nella fantasia dei tessuti e della cravatta.

Together with meeting the charming Peppy Miller, he will soon make another discovery: the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion. This is the plot of upcoming “The Artist”, silent film directed by Michel Hazanavicius, which is a faithful mirror of our times and catwalks too.

These were the same years during which America changed over from the "roaring Twenties" of optimism, welfare and consumerism to the stock market crash of 1929. This hit directly the upper middle class and so began the consumer crunch, while Hollywood stars and gangster movie became the new style icons. In the art, rationalism and modernism influenced the graphic shapes of Edward Steichen’s photography. A historical period similar to the present climate of austerity caused by the economic crisis and vertiginous market oscillations. So contemporary men need confidence and plainness, which are retrievable in ‘20s and ‘30s inspired looks. Tailcoat, bow tie, top hat, white shirt and bicolour shoes are ideal for the evening. While for the day: suit jacket with wide sharp revers and waistcoat, otherwise pinstriped or double-breasted jacket. The variety lies in the pattern of fabrics and tie.
